While it’s always fun seeing the regulars competing in the Schmoedown, there is always something great about seeing a competitor return after a long absence.
Recent weeks have given us just that, with a return to competition for the original fans-turned-competitors for their first appearance (outside of the Free 4 Alls) since the 2017 Ultimate Schmoedown. They were taking on former friend Tim “The Tank” Franco – who hadn’t played since he TKO’d Matt Atchity in June 2017– and his partner Stacy Howard. Even more recently, Double Toasted have just made their grand return at the Houston Live event against the Founding Fathers, having not competed since they defeated the Reel Rejects in May 2017.
Seeing so many well-loved competitors return this month got me wondering who else could make welcome returns to competition. To be included on this list, I made the decision to only include people who haven’t been featured in the last 12 months.
Any of the Wangers
Barring his Jurassic Park exhibition match with Perri Nemiroff, Cody Hall hasn’t competed in a match since February 2018 where he was expected to get steamrolled by Lon Harris but instead pushed him all the way to Sudden Death. The only other member of that group to have competed since 2017 was RB3, who was defeated by Stacy Howard in April 2018 then played in the Free 4 all a week later.
While I don’t think anyone would expect any of Cody, RB3, Ace or Christian “no longer Cobbster” Ruvalcaba to be competing for titles, you can guarantee they’d have a fun time and a match between Cody and Josh Macuga once he returns from suspension would be a great throwback to the old fantasy updates section.
Cody’s opponent in the Jurassic Park exhibition match, “Scary” Perri Nemiroff’s last competitive match was back in June 2017 when a loss for her and Jonathan Voytko to Six Degrees saw Tuff Beats forced to split.
Now the host of the new-look Movie Talk, you would imagine she’ll have a good knowledge of New Releases, while Horror will also be a strong point for her. And let’s be honest, her raps in her pre-match promos need to make a return!
Who else remembers when movie royalty graced the Schmoedown in September 2014, when Leonard and Jessie Maltin took on CinemaSins in the Teams Division? Barring a guest appearance in one of Critically Acclaimed’s recent entrances, Maltin has not been involved in the league since that debut, but I’m sure plenty of competitors would love the chance to take him on.
With his knowledge of the Classics and other older movies, a Triple Threat match between him, William Bibbiani and Drew McWeeny would be an education into finer cinema that even the Harris brothers could not complain about.
It’s crazy to think that due to other commitments, Sam “The Warrior” Witwer has not competed in the league since defeating Ken Napzok in 2017’s Schmoedown Spectacular! Witwer has one of the best accuracy percentages in the Star Wars Division and hi mastery of the quotes gives him an edge where others have struggled.
Alex Damon has frequently stated his desire to face off against Witwer having earned the vacant title almost by default (sorry Bruce Greene!) and if Witwer to return, we could be looking at one of the closest matches in the history of the division! Heck, if Freddie Prinze Jr can make a return as well (and promise not to cheat again), we could see the Force Bros take on the Damons in a battle for the ages.
Other than an appearance in 2018’s Free 4 All, “The Icon” has not featured in a match since losing to Scott Mantz in June 2017. With a combined 0-4 record over Singles, Teams and Innergeekdom, Rudnick may not be a man to compete for title, but he is certainly someone who will keep the crowd entertained.
Even if he can’t get a match arranged, if anyone else starts acting up in the league, the return of Justice Bot could help bring order to the Schmoedown.
