Every week on My Favorite Slice, a Movie Trivia Schmoedown competitor shares their favorite category on the wheel! This week’s guest is Jeannine “The Machine” from The Viper Squad!
As an ‘80s baby and a ‘90s kid I’d like to think I grew up at the height of the Romantic Comedy, or as it’s commonly known, the Rom-Com. Boy crazy in my adolescence, these were my models for what it was like to fall in love. Long sigh, far off stare, heart eye emoji love (yes, it’s my goal to make an emoji reference in every article I write).
I’d see the pretty lady and the handsome guy in some cute pose on the cover and wanna know their love story. Is it the wrong side of the tracks kinda love a la Pretty in Pink? The Sandra Bullock type geek to chic kinda love? The Some Kind Of Wonderful style, realizing my best friend is the one, kinda love? Or is it like the story in my all time favorite movie of the genre, 1993’s The Cutting Edge; the “I hate you but actually really love you” kinda love?
I didn’t realize I was studying these films. Watching them as many times as I could squeeze in before returning them to the video store. Every clever quip from the roguish, yet charming male lead, every great soundtrack song that set the mood for a silly montage or an epic romantic gesture. Every formulaic best friend who gave either the best or the worst advice. I ate it up. That’s how I wanted high school to be, how I wanted falling in love to be.
As I got older that ideal faded but my love for silly love stories did not. And in time rom-coms evolved into more diverse and complex fare. The Other Sister, Something New, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Think Like A Man, Just Wright, Love Simon, The Birdcage, Stranger Than Fiction, Safety Not Guaranteed, Crazy Rich Asians. Films like these reinforced my belief that love and laughter is a universal concept. I’ve recently discovered classics like His Girl Friday and It Happened One Night as well and can see how much romantic comedies today have been inspired by these wonderful early films.
I’ve been lucky enough to get this slice twice! Once landing on it in my match against Emma, and again during the triple threat match where I got spinner’s choice and spun the dial straight to it. I’d like to think those were strong moments for me where I maybe surprised people in this league. Rom-Coms are my favorite film genre, so I guess it’s easy to see why it’d be my favorite wheel slice.
Now let’s make the Rom Com exhibition match happen so I can prove just how much I love these love stories!!
